A geriatric care manager, also known as an aging life care professional, helps older adults and their families navigate the complex and often changing needs associated with aging. Typically trained as nurses, social workers or other aging-care professionals, they assess an older adult’s health, safety, daily living needs and financial situation; recommend appropriate care options; and develop individualized long-term care plans. They also coordinate communication among family members, caregivers, healthcare providers and other professionals, while providing objective guidance and compassionate support. The overall goal is to help older adults remain safe, independent and supported while maintaining their quality of life.
A geriatric care manager can be especially helpful when an older adult begins struggling with everyday activities such as managing medications, personal hygiene, household responsibilities, cooking or paying bills. Services are generally paid privately and often billed hourly, although some long-term care insurance policies may provide coverage. When choosing a care manager, families should consider the professional’s education, experience, certifications and professional affiliations, as well as their reliability, communication style and ability to build trust with both the older adult and their family.
